General

Our products and offers are so far mainly available online. So you can order the food conveniently to your home.

Our products show the expiration date on the bottom of the can. Although the PUJA can is insensitive to light, it is still worthwhile to consume the food quickly after opening.

At PUJA we pay special attention to healthy and natural ingredients and work without artificial additives such as polyphosphates or other artificial flavor enhancers and preservatives. Our VITALITY products are developed by expert veterinarians. Therefore PUJA stands for a high quality standard, not only for the feed but also for our sustainable packaging. For example, our cans are 100% recyclable and our filling material is certified home compostable.

Please store your pet's food in a cool and dry place. The minimum shelf life is marked on the can. Ideally, an opened can should be used within one month.

On each package of our products you will find a detailed feeding recommendation. Please follow this in the context of the daily food ration for your animal and always offer enough water.

Since a low CO2 pawprint and thus regionality is particularly important to us at PUJA, all products are produced in Germany and in the EU. Thus, we not only save environmentally friendly on long delivery routes, and work high quality and innovative with our manufacturers, but also ensure fair working and production conditions.

Our oils are mainly used to supply linoleic acid for the cat or linoleic and linolenic acid for the dog.

Linoleic acid is also an essential fatty acid for cats. It is often insufficiently contained in animal products. A cat needs 140 mg linoleic acid per kg metabolic body weight per day. For a 3.5kg cat, this would therefore be 324mg of linoleic acid per day. Medium-fat beef with a fat content of 20% contains 400mg linoleic acid per 100g, but also 267kcal per 100g, i.e. if the cat should cover its linoleic acid requirement with medium-fat beef, it would have already consumed 100kcal more than it needs. The situation is different, for example, if the cat is fed chicken, since chicken contains significantly more linoleic acid than beef. A cat would therefore need just under 100g of fatty beef or 20g of fatty chicken to think its linoleic acid requirement. Arachidonic acid, which is essential for cats - essential because it lacks the enzymes mentioned above - is present in sufficient quantities in both beef and chicken. Even if a cat is already getting enough linoleic acid from its complete diet, it may make sense for individual animals to feed additional linoleic acid. Linoleic acid strengthens the defensive power of the skin and ensures greater water retention in the cell layers. Especially in the case of stressed or dry skin, the supplementary feeding of linoleic acid can be particularly useful. Vegetable oils such as sunflower oil, hemp oil or even safflower oil have a significantly higher concentration of linoleic acid than animal fats. They also provide important vitamin E, which protects body cells from oxidation. Due to the high concentration of linoleic acid, just a few drops are enough to give a cat a real linoleic acid booster and moisturize its skin.

Dog

PUJA Vitality supplementary food has a wealth of essential nutrients. For example, good oils and fats provide healthy skin and shiny coat, apple contains pectin and promotes intestinal health, ginger and turmeric have anti-inflammatory agents, berries are rich in natural vitamin C. You can find out more on our website or on the labels of the products.

The function of fruits and vegetables lies in their fiber content, which promotes the growth of healthy intestinal bacteria and ensures healthy peristalsis. Both make sense in dogs and also cats.

Gluten has a digestibility of around 95%, which is just as high as that of meat. The digestibility of carbohydrates differs in terms of fiber content, which is why, for example, white flour or wheat pasta are much more digestible than whole grain products of any kind, or rice is more digestible than oatmeal. Thus cereals do no harm.
Cereals are an excellent energy supplier due to their high carbohydrate content. In the course of evolution and its close coexistence with humans, the dog has developed the ability to digest even higher amounts of carbohydrates. For this reason, at PUJA we use grains where it makes sense, like whole spelt flour in our Vitality Skin&Fur. Flaxseeds are NOT a grain and are particularly rich in the omega-3 fatty acid linolenic acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties.

Follow our feeding recommendation for a normal-weight animal. Nevertheless, the same applies to animals as to humans. If there is an imbalance between energy intake and energy consumption over a certain period of time, the fatty tissue increases and the normal weight is exceeded. This can subsequently lead to further health consequences, such as diabetes, organ fatty degeneration, cardiovascular diseases, bone and joint diseases and much more. So, if there is an unhealthy weight gain of your pet, we recommend reducing the amount of food and encouraging exercise.

Meat content varies across our pet food products. We offer 100% pure protein snacks, as well as our Vitality products that have targeted mixed meat and fish content, depending on whether you want to support immune health or beautiful coat growth. For example, salmon is rich in the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA. As you can see, we provide variety.

When handling snacks, it is important to always remember that they are not complete foods, but are supplements and should be handled as such. This means that our PUJA snacks should be used as a reward, in play or for training with your dog and should not replace a main meal. Therefore, it is best to follow our feeding recommendation, which is calculated according to the weight and energy needs of an average dog. Excessive consumption of snacks can lead to unhealthy weight gain.

No, when cats are fed a complete food, it contains everything they need for a healthy life. Alternating different varieties, as is often recommended, is not necessary. It is important to make sure that it really is a complete food. A dry or wet food, which advertises to be without any additives, can not be a complete food, because the natural vitamins are partially lost during heating and must therefore be added. However, it is advisable to accustom the cat to food from two to three manufacturers in case of supply shortages.

Inexpensive cat food brands usually use higher proportions of offal because it is much cheaper to purchase than pure muscle meat. Offal is very tasty for most animals, but it is also less digestible. For this reason, cats often need larger amounts of the cheap feeds. The lower digestibility also often results in larger amounts of feces, and the feces are also more malodorous. Nevertheless, offal is also valuable because it contains a very good amino acid pattern and is very rich in nutrients.

If they are added as flavor enhancers, they must be declared. However, inorganic phosphates are often added. If they are used as a source of phosphorus, they do not have to be declared. Only if they are used as a technological additive for the taste, the consistency or for water binding, then they must be declared.

Grain-free is currently a huge trend in animal nutrition. It is often claimed that grain damages the kidneys. However, this lacks any logic if you take a look at the digestion of grain: https://www.instagram.com/p/CfHBcOgIrw5/. The fact is, in order to produce a dry feed (extruded or cold-pressed), you need carbohydrates as "glue". Whether you draw these carbohydrates from grains, pseudocereals, legumes or tubers, it makes no difference. It is important to know that cats have a limited carbohydrate digestive capacity. Up to 30% carbohydrate in dry matter is not a problem for cats, and most animals can digest as much as 40% in dry matter. Most wet foods on the German market have 4 to 15% carbohydrates in the dry matter, in dry foods it is usually above 20% in the dry matter, individual foods reach the 40%. What happens when there are too many carbohydrates in the feed? When the digestive capacity is exceeded, the carbohydrates reach the large intestine, where they are metabolized by intestinal bacteria, causing diarrhea. However, kidneys or liver are not damaged in any case.

Of course, we know that cats do not have the enzyme delta-6-desaturase, nor the enzyme elongase, which makes a conversion from the omega-6 fatty acid linoleic acid to the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid via the intermediate step of the omega-6 fatty acid gamma-linolenic acid and di-homo-gamma-linolenic acid impossible. Likewise, we know that cats cannot form omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) from omega-3 fatty acid linolenic acid due to the lack of the aforementioned enzymes. For this reason, a purely plant-based diet for cats should also be rejected. Our oils are therefore not intended to fulfill the function of providing cats with the omega-6 fatty acid arachidonic acid or the omega-3 fatty acid eicosapentaenoic acid.
